The Mars moved into this unique, custom-built home from the 50’s located in Encinitas, CA with the hopes to slowly make the changes necessary to keep up with their fast paced lives with two young kids and still stay in touch with their modern style. It took about a year after moving in before the homeowner was ready to make the changes to the falling apart kitchen!

She wanted everything gone, I mean everything. She took us Sisters to breakfast at The Great Maple in San Diego to help give us an idea of what she liked. The style and decor of this restaurant resonated with her and this was a great place to have our first meeting! We picked up on brass/gold accents, with a clean white modern vibe mixed with mid-century touches. This was our goal and we went to work!

We opened up the floor plan by knocking out old cabinets and a wall that created a butler’s pantry– who has butler’s these day? This opened everything up and allowed us to have a clean slate. Next, we installed new wood flooring, all new cabinets, fixtures and appliances. A classic white subway tile was used on the white counters against the white cabinets. Then to break it up we went with a black island. The multi-toned cabinets are hot right now! We went back and forth between turquoise and black, but at the end of the day I think the black Island was the right choice. Then, by updating all the hardware and light fixtures we created a school-house revival look which we love!

We loved designing this kitchen so much we may take a few pieces for inspiration in our own kitchens!
